Prideaux Haven Area, Desolation Sound

Prideaux Haven 6/24/2019

Often referred to as the “West Coast Jewel”.  Majestic snow-capped mountains and awe-inspiring vistas are what attract summer cruisers.

The warm, protected waters are also a drawing card but the water temperature of 63F when we visited did not appeal to us wimpy Texans.

Prideaux Haven is by far the largest anchorage and can easily accommodate numerous large motor yachts and sailing vessels, with stern ties anchored in the rock sides available for smaller vessels to tie to.

Neighboring Melanie & Laura Coves are smaller and equally protected from the open channels and sounds outside.

Our dinghy exploration at low tide exposed multitudes of razor-sharp oyster adhered to the rocks. If going ashore, exercise caution and be sure to have suitable foot wear.
The only safe entrance to Prideaux Haven and Melanie Cove is the narrow pass between Lucy Point & Oriel Rocks.

Exercise caution and issue a securite over the VHF to alert on-coming traffic. Enjoy this piece of paradise.

  1. Wow, what spectacular pictures (and text). We spent July & August of 2012 visiting the length & breadth of Vancouver Island and your blog brings it all back. (Of course, we have several hundred pictures too.)

    Thanks for sharing,
